Relationship between digital media and mental health is a subject to debate from a longer time now. While most of people agree the fact that excessive use of social networks can harm their health, another group argues to its advantages. Well, a new research informed that, the more time you spend on the internet and social media, the more likely you are to suffer from mental health issues is stronger than previously thought.
Scientists have found a link between excessive use and mental health problems – with university-aged students addicted to scrolling social media sites, watching videos online and browsing web pages more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, impulsiveness, inattention, executive functioning or ADHD.
The situation is serious as more and more people are unable to cope with everyday life without having an online fix. The study surveyed nearly 300 students using the Internet Addiction Test (IAT).
Those who screened positive on the IAT as well as on the researcher’s scale had more trouble dealing with their day-to-day activities like household works, official works, school and social settings, commented a senior researcher associated with the research.
The study found 56 per cent of university students had a difficult time controlling their use of video streaming websites, while 48 per cent couldn’t control their use of social media and 29 per cent had trouble staying away from instant messaging.
As well, 42 per cent were facing mental health problems such low to high depression as a result of their over-use of the internet.
Though internet addiction yet not formally diagnosed as a medical situation but as the way internet use has changed radically over the last 18 years, through more people working online, media streaming, social media, it’s not too far.
More and more research in this line should be encouraged on wider samples globally, which will go to the depth of the situation and can find some positive solutions, sighted the study.
The situation isn’t minimal anymore, people should understand and be responsible about their and other’s health as well.
